Instructions
Creating Hawaiian Spam Musubi is straightforward if you follow these steps carefully:
1. Prepare Sushi Rice: Rinse sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Add to a rice cooker with 2 1/2 cups of water and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Season Rice: In a small saucepan, heat rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool.
3. Cook Spam: In a skillet, heat a little oil over medium heat. Fry Spam slices until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side. For extra flavor, brush with soy sauce or teriyaki sauce during the last few minutes of cooking.
4. Assemble Musubi: Place a sheet of plastic wrap on a musubi mold, if available. Add a portion of sushi rice (about a half cup) and press down firmly to create a layer.
5. Add Spam: Place one or two slices of Spam on top of the rice layer in the mold, ensuring it’s centered.
6. Top with Rice: Add another half cup of sushi rice on top of the Spam and press down firmly again to secure the ingredients together.
7. Wrap in Nori: Remove the mold and carefully unroll the plastic wrap. Place a sheet of nori underneath, then place the rice and Spam bundle on top. Fold the nori over the rice and Spam, sealing it tightly.
8. Slice: Use a sharp knife to cut the musubi into manageable pieces—typically about 2-3 pieces per musubi.
9. Repeat: Continue assembling until all ingredients are used up.
10. Serve: Enjoy your Hawaiian Spam Musubi warm, at room temperature, or chilled as a delightful snack!
